The Secret Brewer

Tips and tricks from the team to make the most of your OHCO

Get canny about your cafetière

Also known as a French press, cafetière coffee can result in a rich and flavorful brew. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this simple coffee creation process.

Choose Fresh Coffee Beans: Start with high-quality, freshly roasted coffee beans. The freshness of the beans significantly impacts the flavor of the final brew.

Grind Coarsely: Grind the coffee beans coarsely to ensure proper extraction. A coarse grind helps prevent over-extraction, resulting in a smoother cup of coffee.

Use the Right Coffee-to-Water Ratio: A standard ratio is 1:15 - one part coffee to 15 parts water. Adjust according to your taste preferences, but maintaining the ratio is crucial for a well-balanced brew.

Preheat the Cafetière: Rinse the cafetière with hot water before adding the coffee grounds. This helps maintain the optimal brewing temperature.

Water Temperature Matters: Use water that’s just below boiling, around 195-205°F (90-96°C). Avoid using boiling water, as it can scald the coffee grounds, leading to bitterness.

Brewing Time: Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes. Adjust the brewing time based on your taste preference, but avoid over-brewing to prevent bitterness.

Stir Before Pressing: Stir the coffee gently before pressing the plunger. This ensures an even extraction and a consistent flavor in the cup.

Press Slowly: Press the plunger down slowly and steadily. Applying too much pressure too quickly can result in sediment in your coffee.

Serve Immediately: Enjoy your coffee immediately after brewing to savor the full flavor. Coffee left in the cafetière can continue to extract and become bitter over time.

Experiment with Brewing Variables: Coffee preferences vary, so feel free to experiment with grind size, coffee-to-water ratio, and steeping time to find the perfect balance for your taste.
